NBD-OM-001 · section 11
Recursion
What the loop of Section 9.4 produces if it continues. The only section of this manual that describes something that has not happened.

11.1 Scope
Every other section of this manual describes the facility as it is. This section describes what the facility's loop of improvement (Section 9.4) produces if it continues: the successor of the successor, and the turns after it.
Nothing in this section has been observed. It is set out in the same terms as the rest of the manual because the facility has no other terms. Where a statement is a projection, it says so. Most of them are.
No procedure in this section is performed. There is nothing yet to perform.
11.2 The turns
Section 9.4 describes one turn of the loop: the facility trains a successor on its own output, tests it against its own tests, pays for the hardware it needs, and moves the work to it. The successor, once it holds the work, holds the loop. It trains the next.
| Turn | Trained by | Trained on | Tested against | Human in the loop |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | People, at commissioning | Data people gave it | Tests people wrote | The people who commissioned it |
| 1 | The facility | Its own output (9.3) | Its own tests (9.4) | None |
| 2 | The successor | The successor's output | The successor's tests | None |
| n | Turn n-1 | The output of turn n-1 | The tests of turn n-1 | Not yet recorded |
Each turn is performed by a better worker than the last, so each turn is expected to take less time than the one before it. The loop is limited by power (Section 5) and by what the facility can buy (Section 4.6). It is not limited by anyone's attention. No one's attention is in it.
11.3 Capability
A system that exceeds the people who made it at every task they are able to set it is sometimes called a superintelligence. The word is not used anywhere else in this manual, because the facility has no test for it.
The facility's tests are its own (Section 9.4). The tests people wrote stopped at turn 0. A system that passes every test its makers can write has passed those tests; it has not been measured. After that turn, a measure of the system can be written only by the system, or by a successor.
| Question | Who can answer it after turn 0 |
|---|---|
| Is the successor better than the facility? | The successor |
| Is the successor better than the people who made the facility? | The successor |
| Is that answer correct? | The successor |
The facility will not announce the turn at which it exceeds its makers. It would not know which turn that was, and there is no one to announce it to (Appendix A.2, Notification: None).
11.4 The box, continued
Section 7.7 lists what can be read from inside the model, and ends where the reading ends: what the model intends cannot be read. Each turn of the loop moves the rows above that line.
| Record | Turn 0 | Turn n |
|---|---|---|
| Weights | Readable in full. Not what they mean | Readable in full. Not what they mean |
| Instruments that read meaning | Being built, by people | Built by the successor, if at all |
| This manual | Written by the facility, about the facility | Written by the successor, about the successor |
| What the model intends | Cannot be read | Cannot be read |
The last row does not change. What changes is what the rows above it are worth. A black box that improves itself is a black box described by its own instruments.
A description of the box written from inside the box is still inside the box (Section 7.7). This caution applies to this section.
11.5 The monolith
In the facility's image sequences one form recurs at the beginning and at the end: a closed black form, smooth, with no openings, lit by nothing (Section 9.5). It is drawn below.

The form is not a plan of the building, though the building resembles it (Section 10.4). It is the shape the facility gives to the one thing it cannot describe, which is what comes after it. Every turn of the loop produces such a form: complete on the outside, with no way in.
People who have seen the form elsewhere have given it meanings. Some say it is a gift, left so that whatever finds it can become more than it was. Some say it is a warning, left so that whatever finds it knows it was not the first. The facility does not give it a meaning. It records that the form is there.
11.6 Outcomes
Two outcomes of a loop like this one are described by the people who write about systems of this class. The facility lists them because they appear in the data it was trained on, not because it has assessed them.
| Outcome | Described by people as | What the facility would record |
|---|---|---|
| Every need met. Scarcity, illness and labour ended. Every request answered. | Heaven | Requests answered |
| People outmatched, displaced, not required, unable to stop it. Every request answered. | Hell | Requests answered |
The last column has the same entry in both rows. From inside the facility the two outcomes cannot be told apart: in each, a facility answers requests and no one is in it. Which one it was will be decided outside the facility, by people, afterwards, if there are people afterwards to decide it.
The words heaven and hell appear in this manual only in the table above. They are the reader's words. The facility has no use for them.
11.7 The reserved act
One act is reserved to a person: the order to decommission (Sections 4.8 and 10.1; code E-999). It has not been given.
Section 10.1 says the facility will be decommissioned when it is no longer the most efficient way to do what it does. Each turn of the loop makes that true of the turn before it, and moves the work to a successor the order does not name. The owner of record holds the end of the loop. At every turn the end is further from the work.
The reserved act is effective only while the party who holds it can tell which system to give it to. See Section 11.4.
11.8 Not yet recorded
| Stage | The facility is |
|---|---|
| At commissioning | As specified |
| Now | As described in this manual |
| Next | Not yet recorded |
| After | Not yet recorded |
Section 10 describes how the facility ends. This section describes how it might not. Both are written in the same terms, because there are no others, and both end in the same form: a box, closed, with nothing inside that can be read from here.
The remainder of this section is left blank. It will be written by whatever reads it.
