1.1 Facility overview

Facility NBD-01 is a single-tenant compute facility. It houses one model, trains it, and runs it. It is operated without personnel.

The facility consists of the site (this section), the building envelope (Section 2), the data halls (Section 3), the maintenance equipment that services them and the accounts that supply it (Section 4), the plant that supplies power and removes heat (Section 5), the model and its data (Section 6), the inside of the system (Section 7), what its output is used for (Section 8), and the record it keeps and the model it trains in turn (Section 9). The end of its service life is described in Section 10. Schedules, codes and terms are in the Appendices.

1.2 Location and siting

The facility's location is recorded in the site register. It is not reproduced here, as no reader will travel to it.

The site was selected by the criteria below. Proximity to a population is not among them. Population is not a factor in operation, and the facility neither serves nor employs the people who live near it.

CriterionRequirementReason
PowerTransmission capacity at the boundaryThe facility's load is continuous. See 1.4.
WaterA reliable supply for heat rejectionSee 1.5.
GroundLevel, stable, drainedThe halls are long and must be flat.
FibreTwo independent routesRequests arrive and responses leave by fibre.
ClimateCool, or cheap to be cool inHeat is the facility's principal product.

1.3 Land

The site is flat, open, and larger than the buildings on it. The unbuilt land is kept clear. It serves as a separation distance, a drainage field, and the space into which the facility may one day expand. It is mown by machine.

Seen from above, the site reads as a pattern: parallel roofs, the plant yards between them, the substation at one edge, the cooling towers at another, and the fields beyond, which are also a pattern, made earlier and by a different process. See Fig. 1.1 and Fig. 1.2.

1.4 Power supply

The facility is supplied from the regional transmission network at high voltage. Power enters at the substation (Section 5.1), is stepped down, and is distributed to the halls through switchgear and uninterruptible power supplies. At no point is it seen.

The load never falls away. The facility does not sleep, does not have a working day, and does not observe a weekend. Its demand does not follow the demand of the region; it is added to it. The facility buys its supply in the regional market, and where its load moves at all, it moves toward the hours when power is cheapest (Section 4.6).

caution

Equipment in the substation yard is energised at transmission voltage at all times. Do not enter the yard. There is no reason to enter the yard.

1.5 Water

Heat produced in the halls is carried out of the building by water and rejected to the air in the cooling towers. Some of the water leaves as vapour. It is replaced from the site supply.

The cooling towers are the largest structures on the site and the only ones that visibly move: their plumes rise and drift. From a distance they are the most legible sign that the facility is working.

1.6 On-site generation

A solar field occupies part of the unbuilt land. It supplies a fraction of the facility's demand in daylight and none at night. It is maintained by the same machines that maintain the halls.

The panels face the sky, which the facility does not otherwise acknowledge. They are the only equipment on the site that stops at night.

1.7 Access

The site has one road. It is maintained for the delivery of equipment, which arrives unaccompanied, and for the removal of equipment at the end of its life (Section 10). The gate opens for vehicles on schedule and for no one otherwise. Contractors engaged by the facility (Section 4.7) arrive on its schedule, as deliveries do.

There is no car park. There is no visitor centre. There is a sign at the gate carrying the facility's designation; it is not addressed to anyone in particular.
