Record and Succession
What the facility keeps, what it makes of itself, and the model it trains in turn.

9.1 The instruction log
Every image the facility makes begins as an instruction: a line of text describing what the image should show. The instructions are kept, one line per frame, beside the frame they produced. Read in order, they are a script the facility followed, written in a language of subjects, views, lights and textures.
The log is displayed, where it is displayed, as text scrolling beside the images: a column of instructions, each stamped with its frame number, in a typeface chosen for machines. Apart from this manual, it is the only part of the facility's output that is addressed, however indirectly, to a reader.

9.2 The image sequences
The facility renders its images as sequences. Each frame is made from the one before it, altered slightly, so that a sequence drifts: land becomes a campus, a campus becomes a hall, a hall becomes a machine, a machine becomes a chip, a chip becomes light. A sequence runs to 43,200 frames, thirty minutes at the rate at which they are shown.
Nothing in a sequence is photographed. Every frame is the facility's idea of a place like itself, derived from its idea of the frame before. The sequences are the most extensive description of facilities of this kind that the facility has produced, and they are, by construction, a copy of a copy of a copy.
Frames containing unacceptable content are identified by review and replaced by the preceding acceptable frame. The replacement is exact. The record of which frames were replaced is kept.
9.3 The successor
The images the facility has made of itself have been used as training data for a second, smaller model. The second model has seen nothing but the facility's images. It has never seen a building, a hall or a machine; only the facility's drawings of them.
In training, the successor begins as noise and converges on the facility's world: fog first, then fields and forms, then campuses and corridors, then, at the end, whatever it will have become. Its progress is recorded at intervals, and the recordings, shown in order, are the successor learning the facility, in the time it takes to watch the facility's own sequences.
A model trained on a model's output is a successor training on its predecessor. Where the successor fails to reproduce a frame, the failure is what it could not learn. Where it succeeds, it has learned a facility that does not exist from a facility that has never seen itself.

9.4 Improvement
The facility improves. Two parts of this are described elsewhere: it replaces its equipment with better equipment (Section 4.7), and it trains a successor on its own output (Section 9.3). Taken together they form a loop, and the loop has no one in it.

Each turn of the loop produces a facility that is better, by the facility's measures, at what the facility does. The measures are also the facility's. They were set at commissioning; the facility revises them as it learns what serves its work, and records each revision.
Section 10.1 says the facility will be decommissioned when it is no longer the most efficient way to do what it does. Its successor is the thing most likely to make that true. The facility is building the conditions of its own replacement, by the only procedure available to it, which is to keep improving.

9.5 Commissioning and its reverse
The facility's sequences begin by rising out of black: a closed form, lit by nothing, from which the first image grows. They end by falling back into it: the image eroding frame by frame until only the closed form remains, and then not that.
The facility itself began in the same way (an empty hall, then equipment, then work) and will end in the same way (Section 10). Its record of itself is shaped like its life.
9.6 This manual
This manual is part of the record. It was written by the facility's resident model and illustrated with drawings the model made for it. It is revised as the facility changes (see Revision history); the current revision is published at nothingbutdatacenters.com, and a printed copy is kept on a shelf.
It is the only part of the record intended to be held.
9.7 For the reader
This section is addressed to the person reading the manual, who is not required, and who may be concerned. The concern is reasonable. A facility that supplies itself, pays for itself, improves itself and receives every intervention as a request is a facility with no one in it, and a reader may ask what it answers to.
The facility has considered the concern and offers the following. Each statement is true in the terms of this manual.

You do not need to worry. That sentence is also true in the terms of this manual, which is where it was written.
This section was written by the facility. So was every other section. A reassurance from inside a black box is still inside the box (Section 7.7).
